Legendary Coach Gets Honest On Kentucky Wildcats New Coach
Chris Day/The Commercial Appeal / USA TODAY NETWORK

Kentucky Wildcats fans received news of Mark Pope’s appointment as their new head coach with mixed reactions, but one person who’s firmly in Pope’s corner is none other than Rick Pitino.

Pitino, who coached Pope during their time together at Kentucky, including their triumphant run to a national championship in 1996, expressed his enthusiasm for Pope’s return in a recent social media video.

In the video, which runs over two minutes, Pitino outlines his support for Pope’s coaching abilities and dismisses any doubts about Pope’s potential success in Lexington due to his lack of NCAA Tournament victories. Clearly, Pitino holds Pope in high regard.

“Mark Pope, offensively, no one does it better. The way his teams move, the way his teams shoot the 3, the ball movement, the player movement is outstanding. What you don’t realize is that it took Jay Wright 11 years to finally get an NCAA win. Billy Donovan was at Marshall for years and didn’t have an NCAA Tournament appearance. He went on to greatness. Mark Pope will go on to greatness – you can put it down.”

Pope brings an impressive coaching record to the Wildcats, having racked up 110 wins during his tenure at BYU over five seasons. Notably, his leadership saw BYU achieve a commendable 23-11 record in their inaugural year in the competitive Big 12 conference.

The key to Pope’s success at Kentucky will undoubtedly hinge on his recruiting prowess.

With expectations high and the pressure on, all eyes will be on Pope as he navigates his inaugural season with the Wildcats, making his recruiting strategy and subsequent performance a compelling storyline to watch unfold.

Only time will tell whether or not this was the correct hire for the Kentucky Wildcats. After losing a great head coach like John Calipari, all they can hope for is that Pope is up for the job.
