Cade Horton was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, on August 20, 2001. He played high school baseball at Norman High School in Norman, OK. He was the top-ranked shortstop and the second-ranked overall player in Oklahoma. Horton at Norman played baseball and football, in his senior year he threw for 3,084 yards and 26 touchdowns as well as rushing for 1,149 yards and 15 touchdowns. On the diamond, he hit .375 before the season was shut down due to COVID. Horton was ranked the third shortstop nationally and 27 th for overall players. He committed to play college baseball at the University of Oklahoma.

Horton missed the 2021 season at Oklahoma due to an injury. In his first and only season in 2022, he made 14 appearances with 11 of those coming as starts, he went 5-2 with a 4.86 ERA and 64 strikeouts in 53.2 innings.

Horton was ranked the 24th overall prospect entering the 2022 draft and he was the 12th ranked college prospect. The Chicago Cubs drafted him with the seventh overall pick.

Horton pitched across three levels in his first season in the Cubs organization pitching at Single-A Myrtle Beach, High-A South Bend, and Double-A Tennessee. He made 21 starts going 4-4 with a 2.65 ERA, a 0.99 WHIP, and 117 strikeouts in 88.1 innings.
