Miami Heat Rumors: Jimmy Butler Seeking Max Contract Extension
Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

The 2023-24 NBA season hasn’t even been over for 24 hours for the Miami Heat, yet Heat rumors are already swirling. Heading into the offseason, the front office has some work to do with the roster.

As is the case every offseason, the Heat will likely be in the market and connected to any star player looking for a change of scenery. South Beach is as attractive of a landing spot as any place in the NBA and Pat Riley uses that to his advantage.

However, the No. 1 task on the Heat’s to-do list this offseason could involve retaining their player, and it won’t be cheap. Eligible for a contract extension, recent Heat rumors involve Jimmy Butler and what he is seeking.

According to Anthony Chiang of The Miami Herald, Butler is seeking a max extension from the Heat this offseason. As shared by AhnFireDigital via Legion Hoops on X, that would be a two-year, $113 million extension.

Butler has two years remaining on his current three-year, $146,396,031 deal. He is owed $48,798,677 for the 2024-25 NBA season, but the 2025-26 season is a player option. Adding the two-year max contract onto his current deal would make the total a five-year deal worth just about $270 million.

There is no denying the impact that Butler has for the Heat on the court. He remains integral to their success, as evidenced by the struggles they had in their first-round series against the Boston Celtics in the 2024 NBA Playoffs.

Alas, there will probably be some pause on Miami’s part about agreeing to that extension. Butler will be 35 when the 2024-25 campaign tips off and he has already had issues staying healthy throughout the regular season. That isn’t likely to improve as he gets older.

The extension he is looking for would be max money through his age-38 season. That is something the Heat are going to have to think long and hard about as they are projected to be way over the salary cap for at least the next three seasons already.
